Founded in Paris in 2008, Galerie Martel was one of the first galleries to treat comics as a legitimate art form — and has spent fifteen years championing illustration, painting, comics, and animation as a single, continuous practice. Through WM Arte, that program now runs in Kuala Lumpur too.
History

Galerie Martel has supported internationally recognised artists — Art Spiegelman, Tomi Ungerer, Robert Crumb, and Lorenzo Mattotti among them — for their willingness to work across illustration, painting, comics, and animation without treating any one as lesser than the others. That commitment to graphic art as fine art is what WM Arte brings to Kuala Lumpur: co-founder Simone Mattotti connects the gallery's Paris and Brussels program directly into the Malaysian program his brother Michele and Lihuà run day to day.
The flagship artist is Lorenzo Mattotti — illustrator, painter, and one of the defining voices in European comics. His covers for The New Yorker, his posters for the Venice Biennale, and his work across advertising and film sit at the centre of what Galerie Martel shows.
