How does Lihuà combine Chinese calligraphy and watercolour?
Lihuà applies calligraphic brush discipline (a single loaded stroke, varied pressure, no going back) to Western watercolour fashion illustration. In some works she also brushes Chinese characters directly onto the page and finishes with a red seal stamp.
You can see the brush logic most clearly in the ink-heavy Strokes of Fashion works such as Brushworks 1, where a skirt explodes into black ink strokes, and in Kick N Smash.
Works with brushed characters include Marilyn Monroe, Lavender Dress and Legendary 2.
